Saving Money Through Smart Wireless Strategies

By Joseph B. Kappernick

Having a good mobility strategy is essential to success for any enterprise today. It increases productivity by allowing employees, customers and vendors to stay constantly connected. Because mobility is so important, companies are willing to pay the major costs associated with wireless service. However, paying too much for service you may not need or use can have detrimental effects on your bottom line.

In case you are in the market for a new wireless policy or just need to optimize the efficiency of your current plan, here are five points to keep in mind to help manage your costs:

Don't get locked in. In today's market, it is easy to get locked in with a vendor, whether its with a contract, training, time investments or equipment. Don't sign anything you aren't 100 percent comfortable with and make sure there is a way to opt out if you need to.

Keep your eye on the long term goal. New technology is constantly filling the market. It is very important to you do not let yourself be affected to implement any new projects if you are not certain of their ability to stand the test of time. IT investments can be pricey and time consuming. Make sure that your IT purchases are in line with your business goals.

Allow for your contract to be scalable. Your wireless plans must allow for and adapt to the growth of your business and the ever changing wireless market.

Educate yourself about your data needs. Get more value from your plan by negotiating for the best rates. It is important to track employee date usage so that you may avoid paying for too much data or penalties for going over the plan.

Set up clearly defined usage policy and make sure that employees are aware of their terms. When a wireless device is used for both business and personal purposes, defining who is responsible for what can be a major challenge. Having a clear policy as to what is permitted and what will be covered by your business will help avoid unwanted overage fees.
