The Usefulness Of Static Control Carpet

By Mattie MacDonald

Locations that contain any amount of equipment that holds information through electronic means will be best served by setting precautions in place that will protect these machines from harm. Computerized systems and databases need to be kept out of high temperature spaces, away from possible liquid spills and especially armed against electrical surges. Choosing to have a special carpet designed for static control installed could help eliminate much of the possible risk.

A sudden burst of electrical charge, even a split second one, has the power to cause serious damage to sensitive computer components. The surge of power might result in melted connectors, singed wires, and the irreversible loss of valuable data. While various parts may be replaced or repaired with little issue, having the information deleted may have far reaching repercussions.

As employees walk, creating friction against the carpeting, they generate charges of electricity that store within their bodies. When they touch the various parts of the computer such as the terminal, monitor or keyboard, they release little surges that have been known to cause glitches. If enough voltage is discharged through one or more person at a time, the entire system could suffer.

Protection for sensitive computer systems can come in the form of a specialized carpeting material that attracts and absorbs electrical charges to prevent them from being transferred to the equipment. These products use fibers that are uniquely designed to deliver UL approved permanent conductivity to benefit facilities in multiple ways. Their main purpose is to absorb electricity generated through movement and pull it into a base that is grounded for neutralization.

There are several manufacturers for this type of product though they all share many of the same basic functionality features. As one may expect, having a specialty flooring placed throughout a facility can be quite costly should there be any need to replace portions of it. For the purposes of being economical, the carpet is produced in two foot square tiles for maximum efficiency.

There are multiple benefits to the smaller sections, especially the fact that purchasing a few pieces to replace damaged sections is considerably more economical than buying a roll to cover a whole room. Their designs are such that new tiles and old tiles mix together seamlessly with no noticeable difference in color, stains are masked and traffic patterns are hidden. They are made so that a damaged square can be pulled up and replaced without any disturbance to the surrounding area.

This low maintenance product protects the people working within the area as it simultaneously guards the computers against shocks and surges. Stains are repelled and a simple vacuuming will keep it free of dirt. The carpeting is made to absorb and deaden much of the sound and vibrations from the machinery, and its EPA certified anti-microbial features maintain an area that is free from mold and mildew and their offensive odors.

There are stringent specifications in place for materials sold for their electrostatic conductive properties. This type of carpeting is require to meet much stricter standards than household floor coverings since they post claims of being able to protect sensitive equipment. Some facilities that commonly utilize these products are 911 dispatch units, call centers, data collection banks, computer labs, network servers and critical command offices.
