What To Avoid And Look Out For When Improving Motor Skills Using Play Therapy Training

By John Graham

Almost all functioning ability in humans is learned after birth. This is why play therapy training has become an important factor in improving motor skills in children makes the other systems efficient as well. Motor means movement or the ability of correct movement made possible by muscle strength. In the child develop motor skills are noticed on toddlers of age groups zero to 3 by movement of feet, grasping of an object and pulling.

These are categorized in fine and gross motor skills; Gross motor skills are the main movement of limbs like walking, crawling, jumping and running. Which is also the use of large muscle composition. While fine motor skills involve the movement of toes, fingers and wrist joints. There are many different reasons why some children are not the same level in the development chart with peers.

Utilize the environment best suitable and responsive and introduce pairs and slowly bigger sets of play time or group activities. The pressure may be felt as a parent, therapist or teacher. This would, in turn, put the child in pressure thereby affecting overall growth ability. Do not compare kids take each child as an individual although cases can be closely related to each child s personality is unique.

This may be because of the environment in which the child is exposed to, lacking enough stimulation, obesity or in their unique nature take time to learn new things. At this age play, time for the kid is changed into extensive therapy, without overcrowding with activities but rather introduce one activity at a time. Outdoor play, when introduced to the child, helps the development much quicker than children confined to indoors and restricted activities.

Do not emphasize or show disappointment when a child fails in attempting motor skills. Rather clap hands and cheer on, this would give motivation and love for physical actions. Lead by example, children like to imitate grownups, take turns in throwing and catching the ball, drawing and in playing dress up. Sometimes just asking for help from a child to button a shirt would give a feeling of usefulness.

Remember it is not a disability for a child but own unique growth rate, if there is any concern can be ruled out by a visit to the pediatrician or raised by a physician during milestone charting visits and immunizations. At 12 months the child normally starts pulling up to sitting and standing positions. Walking chairs may be introduced to aid movement but must not be entirely dependent on such assisting or support tools.

It is at this stage also when the baby would start imitating what is done by others even in speech. At 14 months encourage baby to use hands and utensils for feeding. Selecting child-friendly soft cutlery with fun colors for a child to be familiar with and get excited at seeing it.

At 2 years plus include more fine motor skills like cutting paper, playing with dough and writing utensils. It is important to monitor children at play always, to avoid getting hurt and other children as well while keeping the environment playful and fun. While 3 years of kindergarten age is perfect for Lego toys to improve fine motor and also color and shape recognition.
